The clinical range of Cerebral palsy (CP) can vary in different places relying upon the knowledge of the people and resources for prevention, diagnosis, and management. CP has been studied extensively in high-resource countries, but adequate data from resource-constraint settings are lacking.

A recent study described the profile of children with CP at a tertiary care center in eastern Nepal.

The study enrolled children (6 months to 15 years) who presented with CP and recorded their clinical details.

The results were as follows-

  • The study enrolled 110 children with CP, among which 74.54% were male.
  • 76.36% of the children were of age 5 years or below with the median age being 3(2.00–4.75) years.
  • 44.44% of the Children had spastic quadriplegia and 41.81% had Gross Motor Function Classification System level III.
  • Etiologically, perinatal factors (64.54%) like perinatal asphyxia (35.45%) and prematurity (20.90%) and postnatal infections (25.45%) were commonly reported.
  • Intellectual disability (71.81%) and epilepsy (66.36%) were the common comorbidities.
  • Antiepileptics (59.09%) and center-based physiotherapy sessions (35.45%) were the main treatment modalities followed.
  • 23.07% received School education with 11.53% special education.

This study describes the profile of CP at a center in eastern Nepal. The predominance of perinatal complications and postnatal infections indicates an urgent need to further improve the perinatal and neonatal health care delivery system and practices.
